Detroit.
My boyfriend and I decided to get away last weekend to Detroit to see what else is happening in the Midwest. We booked our room and planned to take off Saturday afternoon.
We stayed at Trumble & Porter Hotel. Detroit, like most cities, is going through a resurgence and all of the creative, indie, culture fueled Michiganders are gunning to make their mark on the city to create a new and deeply rooted future for the industrious city. Since this is the case, there were so many classic and new places to see and eat in our short stay.
The highlight of the trip, for me, was the Motown Museum. I'm actually surprised at how amazing it was! Our guide was so talented in her own right and her passion for music made it even more interesting. We wanted to hit up the art museum as well, but I'm so anti-itinerary that we chucked it so we could spend more time wandering the streets all day.
We did a Coney dog faceoff between the famous American Coney Island & Lafayette Coney Island, had charcuterie + cheese at Sugar House, Slow's barbecue for lunch, Flood's soul food for dinner, wasted time at the casino (lol), tried the local cocktail "The Last Word" in our hotel lobby (Red Dunn Kitchen) and grabbed a bottle of Two James gin for our bar cart before hitting the road.
All-in-all, it was a success. You all know that I always book a workout when I travel and my calendar/alarms were off because of the hour change, so I missed one class and the cocktails were so good that I cancelled the other because--cognac. I definitely want to go back and I definitely want to stay at Trumble & Porter again. Being in (and or around) the heart of the city was key and—let's admit it—hipsters really just know how to get I right in the service industry, these days.
I praise the city for it's history, diversity, and growth. I want to go again and this time not forget to tell all my friends that l'll be there, lol. I'd also say that 72 hours is better than just under 48. As we walked and researched, so much more unfolded before us to say that the city is up to something amazing and we were just scraping the surface. Up next is a toss up between St. Louis and Nashville. When we know, so will you. Put Detroit on your list of places to see and tell me what I missed.
Bon voyage!
